On February 1 we finally had "the big one." We wait all winter for the biggest snow of the year...and we got it- more than 2 feet over night with gusting winds that caused 4-5 foot drifts against our houses...not only were all the schools closed, but almost all of the businesses, too...it took all the neighbors working together to dig the street out!! SO much fun!! The rest of the month was busy with many new happenings at Alan's school and lots of social activities for us...Alan and I got to have 3 date nights this month (no pictures to prove it)- but it was so fun to go to 2 surprise Birthday parties and to a Griffins game with the LA faculty and staff. Thanks to the family for babysitting...Great month of fun!

During Alan's Mid-Winter break, we took a "stay-cation." We used bank points to stay 2 free nights at a local hotel with a pool and waterslide, we visited the Grand Rapids Public Museum, took a hike, and enjoyed some local yummy fare...it was a really nice "get-away!!"

January Moments

January was a GREAT time of slowing down (its often our only "slow" month of the year)...so, we savored it by spending countless nights and Saturdays together as a family...playing, dancing, laughing and goofing around. We are so thankful for the invaluable gifts of our family and time together. It makes me think of a song that I love to sing to my hubby, that is so true, "And even though we ain't got money, I'm so in love with you honey. Everything's gonna be alright...and in the mornin' when I rise, it brings a tear of joy to my eyes...and tell me everything's gonna be alright!" This month just felt like a deep, cleansing breath...aaaahhhhh!

What a Wonderful Christmas...

Christmas-time was so wonderful this year. We enjoyed having Alan home for 14 whole days (Oak counted each day:), and just playing, reading, baking for family and friends, making gifts (and our own wrapping paper), painting (Alan has been doing a lot of painting the past few months- loves the creative outlet, and the kids really enjoy helping him), eating, playing in the snow, playing with family (Uncle Shaun and Aunt Mandie came for a visit),w atching movies...it was just a great break for all of us!!

It was also so very special to watch as Oak has begun to understand the real meaning behind the Christmas season. We really tried to emphasize in our nightly advent readings and in the daily activities of the season the story of Jesus' birth, his amazing gift of love for us and our response of serving the Lord by giving and sharing with all around us. He was so very sweet to think of who and what he wanted to make for family members and friends...and Isla, well, we think she just enjoyed the lights, music, and lots of yummy food (she's a hoot:) Thanks, Aunt Jan and Uncle Tiny...we love our new hats!! Aren't they soooo cute??!!

December 1- Happy First Snow!!

Isla loves "pretending" to go potty since everyone else in our house does... But, then she won't put her diaper back on and wants to play "nakey buns" and we end up with poop on our floor, as happened in this picture just a few minutes later. Thank goodness for wood floors that clean up and sanitize easily!

Oak and Isla have been making their own indoor fun these days...and building blanket forts is a daily occurrence. They go in and read their books, play blocks, talk about the day...it is hilarious!

So, I think I am finally "caught up" and now we have a functioning camera, too! December 1 brought our first snow of the winter and it was beautiful...we had been waking up every morning for weeks, pulling back the curtains and saying" Is there snow, yet?" And on this morning, Oak said, "Yes, Mom, look at all the snow!!" We also have thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas season, again, this year. We have a tradition of decorating immediately after Thanksgiving and only listening to Christmas music from then until January 1! The kids have really gotten into the spirit this year, and Oak is beginning to understand more about the real reason we celebrate Christmas...Jesus' birth, the greatest gift, worshipping Him and serving Him. As a family, we have had nightly advent readings and activities that have been precious, enjoyed our 10 album IPod Christmas music mix piping through the house, loved baking cookies for friends, and making gifts for family, buying for our friends in Haiti, and spending time together. I said it this morning...I just love being with my family. We have some really fun times...and yes, there are days that are tiring, hard, stressful...life is real...but, I am truly being honest when I say that I am so thankful for my husband and kids...and so very blessed beyond measure!

Oak, today, when painting with Alan on the concrete floor of the basement, double-pumped his arms and exclaimed, "Yes, that's awesome! A black rhino!" He loves making art with his Dad right now and that was a precious moment for Alan.

Isla has created the "hush hush" gang. We all climb under the blanket on our bed and whisper "hush, hush". It comes from one of her favorite books, but I wish you could hear her say it, probably the sweetest thing ever. And, today, she stood on the stool at the stove and pointed to the tea pot and said "ha ca"...since we had come inside from playing in the snow and our normal routine is to have hot chocolate after outside play time. She's no dummy, get that "ha ca" started, mom!

P.S. Our annual Christmas letter and picture is going to be a New Year's edition this year, since we haven't been able to get a great picture of the four of us without a functioning camera...it is on its way next week, all!

November- Slow down and Our 10th Anniversary!

After the 5K is over, it takes me some days to ramp down, pay all the bills, and leave my race team alone until we have our debrief meeting.

The days that followed in November were so sweet. The weather began to get colder, but we continued to use our bike and stroller to get around, and enjoyed bundling up to play outside. I have been telling Alan that during November and December, there were so many amazing moments with the kids, I wish I could remember them all to re-tell them on this blog, so that I could look back and never forget them. Isla continued to change and grow so much during this time, every day making us laugh and be amazed...and Oak progressed amazingly in his learning of letters, numbers, puzzles and patterns...so cool to be a part of their lives! Our leaves were some of the last on our street to fall this year, but we had a lot of fun playing in them!!

Oak and Isla-constantly playing together and in every room they go to, they make up a game that requires running, jumping over, ducking under and wrestling in some way. They always laugh and have fun and usually end with one or both hurt or crying:)

Thanksgiving break was truly that...we had our Daddy home for 5 whole days and we "relaxed!!" Alan loves his work and feels the Lord has truly called him to this school, but since he works with such tough kids, it is often emotionally, spiritually and physically draining. His breaks are truly needed for restoration and refreshment!

This is Oak-town (Oak's Geo-Trax City that has been built over the past few years) that for the Thanksgiving holiday got to be built in the living room. Alan and the kids had so much fun playing all day and night!

November 17-Our 10th Anniversary

We have no pictures to commemorate the day...but, it was such a special time of reflection, renewed commitment, thanksgiving for the journey and shared love! We are so very thankful that God has allowed us to walk life's journey together, and count each day as a treasured gift and joy...and we keep laughing! We spent the evening at a nice dinner out with our kids (that was actually quite crazy, but what do you expect with a 1 and 3 year old:) and then over a bottle of wine looked back on our 10 years of photos and read our "Top Ten Reasons Why We Love Each Other and Are Thankful for Each Other!" It was simple and simply perfect!

October- Liz's Birthday, Races, and Al's Gall Bladder

October...what a month...and really not many pictures to show all that happened! We began with visiting ArtPrize 2010...an awesome outdoor art contest in our very own GR. It was so fun to do with the kids and they really got in to the different art pieces. We then celebrated my birthday, I ran the GR 1/2 marathon (pictures on FB from my friends), Alan was in the hospital for 3 days and had his gall bladder removed, the 2nd annual Alger Heights Halloween 5K (the race I co-direct, pictures also on FB from friends) went off sucessfully, and Halloween was so fun with our Dr. Oak and Flower Isla!

One of the gifts of my birthday week (which was amazing, as always...my husband spoils me and blesses me every year in creative and humbling ways) was to choose our adventure for the day as a family. So, after church we headed west on Leonard to the lakeshore (one of my favorite places on earth:), and our favorite scenic route to the lake. It was fun to be in our "church" clothes on an October day, sunny and bright, not warm, but beautiful, playing in the sand. We then went on to downtown Holland for a fun walk and yummy food. It was such a wonderful day...

My parents' gift to Alan and I for our birthdays was to go to a Mavericks vs. Pistons game in GR (yep, first time ever:), and then SURPRISE...to have a luxurious night away at the JW Marriott hotel downtown. What a treat...our first overnight without both kids (Isla still wasn't weaned at this time...I shed a few tears, my mom didn't sleep much, but everyone made it:) and in such a beautiful place, overlooking the river and the lights of downtown...it was so special. Thanks, Mom and Dad!!

Two weeks later Alan had severe pain and ended up in the hospital with emergency gall bladder removal...we spent from Sunday evening until Wednesday at the hospital...the kids were amazing and our family and friends helped so much staying with them when they slept and shuttling everyone around. It was a team effort-and Alan came out like a champ!

Halloween was sunny and not too cold...Oak was a Doctor, scrubs and all, and Isla a sweet, squishy flower. They really got in to the "trick or treat" this year and I had to keep reminding them that I wanted to hear their "thank yous" as loud as their "trick or treats!"

September- Fall Fun and Alan's Birthday

September began our "Fall routine." Daddy was back in to the full swing of things with school and so we filled our days with hikes, trips to the Children's museum, playing with friends and an attempt to do a Pre-Pre-School at home with Oak...very laid back style.Isla Bo Baggins, as Ms Heather called her this day, on a hike at Aman Trail

Alan...an amazing man, talented, creative (he began to paint this summer and fall), caring, intelligent, a servant's heart, hard-working, hands-on Dad, playful, funny, jokester, tender, loving...we are so thankful to have him as our best friend, husband, and Dad! Happy Birthday, Alan!

Oak's 3rd Birthday

It has become a neighborhood tradition to do a laid back, "backyard cupcake birthday party." So, this year, Oak wanted dinosaur cupcakes (this was after many weeks of deliberation between doctor, monster, fire truck or airplane cupcakes). He helped put each dinosaur on the cupcakes and then we had an airplane cake at his family party the next day. The best of both worlds!

August 21- Happy 3rd Birthday, Oakster!

Our little guy has grown up so much in one year...he is active, loving, caring, aggressive, loves wrestling and shooting monsters, playing with Daddy, running and riding his tricycle, reading and playing at the beach, playing with his sister and cooking. At times, he is intense and loud, and at other times, he is introverted, shy, and very quiet. He loves his bobie (blue bear), his friends, his sister and his Dad! Thank you, Lord, for our precious son!

During August the kids began to really play "together!" It has been so fun (and at times very challenging, when the fun turns to a fight over toys and such) to watch them grow to love each other and to become best friends...what a treasure to have a sibling!

"Mom, I am a big girl and can feed myself." Isla became very independent after her birthday...and her personality just soared in those months. It is so cool to see the funny, little lady that she is...

July- Summer Travels and Isla turns 1 year old!!

July began with a bang! We traded our two cars in for one mini-van, better known as the "swagger wagon" to Alan. We swore we would never get one...but, it has been a great car for us, and it felt good to be a "one-vehicle" family. We headed out the same day for a long camping trip with Grammy and Grampy throughout northern Michigan in a camper (Oak thought it was so cool to be able to sleep in a bed while we were driving). This was another first for the kids...it was an adventure (no pictures to show), and we had a really fun time exploring Lake Huron (brrrhhh, very cold and rocky, but so beautiful), Mackinaw Island and some new campgrounds! We came home for two days and then headed out on our long road trip to Dallas. Our plan was to drive 6-7 hours a day and camp wherever we landed each afternoon. The kids had already proven they were troopers and loved to camp, so this seemed like a great idea...we forgot to factor in the heat index as it grew hotter as we headed south. Needless to say, we attempted to camp both nights on the way down, but ended up using Dad's "pool and cool" fund to stay in cheap, but clean and cool hotels. Crazy, fun stories to re-tell someday. We enjoyed our stay in Dallas, catching up with our good friends, the Dyers, my aunt and cousin, and all of the Carter Family. We went to a water park, the Dallas Aquarium, Ft Worth Zoo, and Alan attended a school conference...and we all had a blast. On the way home, we hit two new cities for us, Nashville and Louisville (and of course, we took the Slugger Museum tour). It was a great first road trip as a four-some and Alan declared as we arrived home, "this is definitely how we are traveling for the next few summers, let's head west next year." And so, it actually seems we might be going to Colorado for next summer's school conference....Once home, we enjoyed hot summer days and celebrated our sweet Isla turning one year old...she is our treasured girl!! Isla in Nashville...she might end up in this City. She loves music so much that at the slightest beat of any type, she moves and dances...thus, we have instated nightly Carter Dance Parties in our kitchen!!
Carter Fam on White Rock Lake...we showed many of our old stomping grounds to the kids during this trip and had some fun laughs down memory lane. We loved living in Dallas and miss our friends and family there so much!!

A lake in Illinois (can't remember the name) that was our 1st pit stop on the trip down to Dallas. Beautiful lake that "you are not allowed to swim in!" Say what to Michiganders?? Our 2nd pit stop was at Lake Ouachita State Park, Arkansas. A most gorgeous place...but as you can see from our clothes and faces beyond humid and hot...and the lake was so warm that there was no reprieve to be able to sleep. This is Alan moving our tent to a 2nd campsite we thought might be a little cooler...we ended up packing up at midnight and driving to find any available hotel, which was over an hour away...so crazy!!

PLAYING CATCH UP SINCE JUNE...will post a month at at time...SORRY!!

June was great fun...as the weather warmed up and our trips to the beach began!! We love getting out to the lake as much as possible during the summer!!

We headed out to Lake Michigan to continue our Father's Day tradition of celebrating with the whole fam on the beach and grilling out...fun, relaxing, quiet...a great way to celebrate Dads!!Isla's 1st Father's Day with her Dad...she's got him completely smitten:) Love that corn, Mom!!

Father's Day weekend was the beginning of Alan's few days off during June...so, we had planned ahead to spend Sunday at the beach with the whole family and then continue up the lakeshore to one of our favorite campgrounds in Muskegon and camp for 2 nights. Isla's first camping experience...both of the kids were in heaven getting to play in sand on the beach, then dirt, leaves, sticks, etc. in the campground. The days were a perfect 75-80 and sunny, and the nights cool in the 60's-perfect to sleep well. It was a great first camping trip of the summer and Isla was a champ!!
How could we need this much stuff for 2 nights of camping??

Lots of beach play-time! Alan and I are big beach-bums...so, we love that our kids love the beach, too!! Michigan summers are a blast!

During the last week in June, we headed out to a close-by, inland lake and beach on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Daddy got hold of the camera, again, and took some fun pictures...

Normally I wouldn't allow a picture to be posted showing my lower half, but Oak and I were having so much fun "erasing" our names in the sand, it had to be shown:)

Well, I finally got the pictures off my phone and am able to upload to the computer (wow, its amazing all the time this new technology saved me;)

2) I will put up as many pictures for each "event" as I would have had I posted these all separately- so get ready for lots of pictures:) (not all great exposure since they were on my phone, sorry:)
3) Once again- I am sorry to those of you who keep up with us through these pics and I have jipped you out of seeing our life over these past 3 months: Isla's growth and change since being a 7 month old to our now very mobile, talkative, wrestling 10 month old:) Oak potty-trained and riding his bike fast "like Dash"- and so very much a gentleman taking care of his mom and sister always-and hilarious in his talkativeness- "almost 3 year old"s sure do pick "it all up". Alan working his buns off and being the best Dad and Husband ever! And me, just trying to keep up and have fun!
Thanks for your grace!! We have had a blessed, busy, fun, crazy, wonderful past three months- thanks for sharing in it with us!

March began with warm days (now, of course we still had bouts of snow and cold through April and May, but we enjoyed being able to start more outside play right away in March) Easter Celebration- We had a neighbor egg hunt on Friday evening (after I had vein sugery all morning:), family time on Easter Sunday morning, and then another fun egg hunt with Grammy, Grampy, Uncle Tim, and Aunt Libbie on Sunday afternoon Spring Break-Quick trip to Chicago (Oh how we love our Chi-town) First swim of the season- warm enough for Michiganders when the sun is out even if the water is still 50 degress coming out of the hose:) Spring Schedule- "Monday Playgrounds" and "Friday Hikes"

Isla's first "taste" and touch of sand Oak "riding" his tricycle alone for the first time- after practicing since last Fall, it finally clicked for him how to pedal on his own- and since then he has been off. No parent handle, no help if he tips over...his own words are "momma, I am a big boy now, I don't need your help." Yep, you guessed it, some tears from momma were shed...I did reply that even big boys need help sometimes- we all do, and that it is okay to ask for it. Of course, the depth of this comment was lost on my two year old:) Where does the time go, literally, where does it go? We are so proud of our ever-growing, ever-changing, amazing son!!

Papa and Granna Carter visited in Mid-May for 6 days...and as usual, I forget to take pictures for most of their visit-sorry:). I did catch a few when we went to the zoo and this one with Granna and Isla is beautiful!

A real brown bear- the animals came alive to Oak this year at the zoo, as he has spent most of the last year obsessed with any growling animal, lions, tigers, bears, dragons, monsters, etc.

Lazy summer afternoons- its almost mandatory, as soon as naps are over, all the kids file out of their respective houses in their swimsuits and hit one of the backyard pools- and it has been wonderful-since we have been in the 90's for two weeks (too hot for Michigan in May:)

First 2010 trip to Millenium Park Isla officially started crawling at about 8 months and has been off like a shot since then- she loves to walk with our hands now and is trying to move around from furniture to furniture, she loves to wrestle with Daddy and Oak after dinner, she thinks Oak is the funniest person and will laugh at what he does for no reason at all, she is babbling a lot (dada, mamama, ooooo-and of course lots of screeching and growling- her trademarks:), she still has the sweetest smile that lights up the room (and my heart every day:) We are so thankful for this amazing baby girl and the privilege to have her as our daughter!!

Fun family trip to Home Dept on Memorial Day:) Lots of home improvements around here lately- and of course those lead to more fix-ups that we have to get done:)

Okay, I know I have been bad before about getting photos up- but I think this is longest I have gone- over 2 months...I am so sorry!!! I have been taking lots of pictures, but with my camera on my phone and now have discovered I don't have an easy way to upload them to my computer- so it will be a slow process of emailing them all to myself to be able to save them to the computer and then upload them here (technology saves us so much time, right??:)

In reality a lot has happened in the last two months, so many fun, new things in our family...Easter, spring has been beautiful, outdoor play is in full bloom, Oak has been potty trained since first week in March, Isla is crawling all over and trying to walk some, too (with our hands of course:) for a month now...and babbling all the time....just so much!

So, I am really sorry that we have not shared our March and April 2010 lives with you yet...but we will soon!!

Isla in her first swimsuit...Alan got chills she looked so cute...don't you just want to squeeze those adorable chubby legs?

Oak warmed up to swimming again after about 5 minutes (since he hadn't swam since last September) and wanted to jump to Daddy over and over again

Alan got a 4 day weekend at the end of February, so with no extra money, we decided we needed some fresh air and to get out of town...we found a very affordable, clean, nice, with a pool hotel in Traverse City, northern MI...one of the best year-around tourist towns on Lake Michigan...and took off for 3 nights. It was such a nice respite as a family...we enjoyed the travel, the beauty of the northern snow, winter on Lake MI (the water was still a beautiful turquoise and blue even though it was 10 degrees out), wineries and vineyards (some of the best in the U.S. on the 45th Parallel), swimming in the pool (Oak couldn't get enough of it), good food, fun shops, and an overall friendly place. Alan now has added "own a cherry farm or vineyard on Mission Peninsula" to his list of things to do before he dies:) It truly is a great area, and we had so much fun as a family just getting away for a little bit!

Yes, more nicknames abound, as our little chunk-a-munk (sorry, Suzy, to steal that from you, but it is so fitting for Isla right now:) grows and changes. She is over 6 months old now and has been rolling around, sitting up to play with toys, trying rice cereal, and giving lots of gooey, open-mouthed kisses...oh, I almost forgot, she cut her first two teeth yesterday and today (amidst beginning our real effort at potty training Oak...fun times at the Carter house this week;)

New Year- Happy 2010

Can you believe we are in 2010...I remember 2000 like it was yesterday...wow!!
We have started our new winter 2010 routine and schedule this week, and it is going well...things are busy again...but, we are trying to prioritize our time and have fun while we do everything (even while changing the 14th diaper of the day:)
This week, Oak is continuing to show his growth and ever-changing mind...in his artwork and puzzles, games, and play...also in taking more responsibility for certian duties...we love our son and are so proud of him and amazed at the little boy he is becoming!
Isla decided as her new year present to us to start to roll over and sit up- she has done both this week several times...and I wish there was a way to show you her amazing smile and giggles, I can never catch on camera...I know what it means to smile with your eyes now, our girl does it. We love her so much and can't believe how wonderfully we have been blessed!
Both kiddos light up our days...I have caught them several times this week making each other laugh so hard by doing silly things...precious moments... I know Isla looks kinda goofy here, but between trying to sit up for the first time and the crazy cloth diaper...so funny, she started to lean and slowly went left a few seconds after this picture:)

December was so much FUN!!

We can honestly say we had a great Christmas season this year, not too busy, not too slow, just right. I think it was due to Alan putting his foot down and saying after over a year and a half of being too busy that we needed a month to just "be"...so we said no to a lot of things and only went to the festivities that we had to be at or wanted to go to, we spent lots of time outside sledding and having snowball fights, followed by cups of hot chocolate, followed by lots of movies (Oak is becoming a movie buff like his dad;), played tons of cars and tickled/wrestled for hours. It was so great having Alan home for over 2 weeks...I think I enjoyed this holiday break more than one I can remember...probably due to having both kids and loving to have our daddy around to play with! For Isla's first Christmas and Oak's third, it was so beautiful to watch them...the beauty of the sights and sounds around the house and town, Oak loved our tree so much that he cried when we took it down last week...he understood that it was Baby Jesus' birthday we were celebrating and that we made cookies for his party...Isla was mesmerized by the lights every morning as we turned them on in the dark...Oak was appreciative for every gift he received (amazing in my book , for a 2.5 year old) and concerned about Isla getting nice things, too. Alan and I enjoyed seeing our kids bring the spirit of Christmas alive in our hearts...of true love and sacrifice, of giving of all that you have for others. We love this time of year...and this year, we loved it so very much!!

We felt so blessed to have our family, a warm, safe home, and wonderful friends all over the world...so many do not have these amazing riches, we pray God's provision and peace for all those in need...it was an amazing season to give thanks and rejoice in all that God has given and blessed us with!

He wants to build BIG snowmen and sled AGAIN AND AGAIN...he walks up the big hills all by himself and sometimes even carries his own sled...we are loving being in the winter wonderland with him...so much fun! Oak joined the annual tradition of making Christmas cookies on Christmas eve before candle-light service- he used the entire bottle of sprinkles on those three cookies...yummy! It has been a great couple of weeks...I have kind of combined everything from the last month or so into one post, it goes in backwards chronology, so you might want to start at the bottom of the post...there are lots of pictures to document all that has happened since October 31st...because, hey, this is our family's online scrapbook, I think some pics are just funny and true to life and we have had a lot of fun in the last few weeks:) Enjoy!!
P.S. Alan and I celebrated 9 years of marriage on November 17 and didn't get any pics to show for it...we had a great dinner at Kobe Hibachi Steakhouse, where we actually talked to each other for a solid hour without interruption, then we went for yummy dessert and hot chocolate at a fun candy/sweet shoppe in a local neighborhood. Babe, you are the best partner on this journey I could ever ask for...11.5 years of living life, learning, and laughing, and I love you more than ever!!

An annual Christmas tradition since we moved back to Michigan 2.5 years ago is to go help out at my parents' Christmas tree party for their clients. Everyone stops by, visits with my parents while having hot chocolate and donuts, and picks out a tree. We have gotten our family tree each year at this time. So, this is Oak's 3rd tree getting expedition and I was sure he would love it more this year...but, of course, he didn't nap, fell asleep in the car and awoke quite crabby, so I documented some of his crying episodes. Isla, meanwhile, was loving it, and smiling the whole time with rosy cheeks:)

Isn't Isla a big girl?? Four months and one week old...and so now I won't do a separate post for her each month, but rather just include her in our family posts, since she is one of the important pieces to our Carter family puzzle!!

We have instituted a "First Friday Edna Street Fun Night" with our neighbors, where over the winter months we get together with all of our neighbors that we are used to seeing every day, but won't since it is cold, to stay in touch and hang out, have fun and food on the first Friday night of the month. This month, we turned it into our Christmas party and had white elephant re-gift exchange. It was so much fun...and look at how many adults and kids we have in one living room?? Isn't it great:)

These mini-sombreros were one of the many awesome re-gifts at the party. For those of you who know Alan, I tried to get rid of one of his 12 year old, cut off t-shirts that is grey now instead of white- but he stole it back on his turn for a gift...oh well, with loving my hubby comes loving his yucky t-shirts:)

I know you get sick of me talking about the season changes, but it happened again and OH HOW I LOVE IT!! We had all been wondering when the snow would come, since a "No Snow November" is VERY RARE, and then it hit Thursday night as I walked home from the first Christmas party of the season...the beautiful flakes began to fall and pile up. Over night we got about 6 inches, all schools were closed on Friday morning, except Alan's (such a bummer) and we awoke to the pristine, stark, beauty of this...Thank you, Lord, for your amazing creation that reminds me each day of your awesome power!

I've always loved to take a run right after a snow fall, be the first to forge the trail through the fresh blanket. So, I bundled the kiddos up and we pushed through a walk around the block (nothing was shoveled or plowed, yet, so it was quite a PUSH)...such beauty surrounded us and Oak loves the snow this year, while Isla just simply enjoys the new experiences of each day...she came home from our walk with the sweetest snowflakes on her pretty eyelashes

This was the only smile I could get out of Oak, because in normal toddlerdom, nothing is going to be fun until Mommy forces you to do it:)

We began Christmas decorating last weekend and this was Isla on the couch trying to help, and looking oh so cute!!

I just love trying to get a family picture-you know, the mom is always trying to get a good one, and for one reason or another none of them usually end up being perfect, but you know that is why I love it, life is not perfect...so this one was the best of three and we still have Mom with eyes closed, daughter looking down, son with goofy thumb in mouth, and hey Dad, you look pretty good:)

Grampy Anders turned 55 and we took him to Hibachi steak for dinner (it is kind of a family birthday tradition)- Oak really enjoyed watching the food being cooked this year, last year he wasn't quite sure what was going on...and Isla just smiled and cooed, always content:)

Granna Carter came for a November visit (a little early this year, we missed you PaPa and Granna at Thanksgiving). We had a good time just doing our normal daily routine with Granna around to help hold one kid or the other, play, and have fun (of course, she also got to be part of the daily infant crying, toddler meltdowns, and normal crazy fun life in the house of a family with two kids under 3:)

We had unseasonably warm weather all throughout November- Oak and a neighbor friend, Clara, were playing in the leaves...we are so very blessed to have great neighbors with almost a dozen kids Oak and Isla's age that live right on our immediate block to play with and live life with on a daily basis...it is an awesome experience!

This Fall, I did something I have always dreamed of...directed a Race!! Since July of 2008, I have been working with Stacy (my co-director, below) to plan the first 5K Race to ever happen in our neighborhood. It took a lot more work, organization, and time than I had ever imagined as I have stood at many road race start lines over the past 17+ years, but it was an amazing event, lots of fun, and a great learning experience-maybe something I would like to do for a paying job someday. We are pumped to do it again next year-starting back up in January!

How can we express it best....our baby girl is so sweet (don't get me wrong, she still knows how to use her lungs and screeches unlike Oak ever did-must be a girl thing:)! She has the best smile and giggle, the most sincere and innocent look of adoration...she has stolen the hearts of her big brother, daddy and mommy! The FUN of FALL

I know I have blogged it before, but I love the seasons in Michigan...and every year, every time it changes to a new season, I get excited. Alan and I laugh, because you are truly a Michigander if you love the season you are in, but after about 2 months start to complain and look forward to the next one. This is totally me. So, now that we are in the beautiful Fall days, I have to show some pictures (these go back about a month). We have had so much fun at the pumpkin patches, apple orchards, drinking lots of cider (mostly Oak and me:), watching football, taking great walks through the leaves and enjoying every minute of the fresh, crisp (actually quite cold lately:) outdoors when it is not raining:) The colors this year seem to be especially bright and beautiful...can't stop looking at them!!

Isla turned 2 months old on September 28! (Now that it is October 21, she is almost 3 months old...but, in the busyness of everything it has taken me too long to post these pictures.) So, here are some of our sweet little miss at 2 months (next week I will put some new 3 month pictures up):) At that time, she was just beginning to smile a lot and always at her daddy, she just loves him...and she began to be more alert, staying awake for an hour or more at a time. I have been telling people that I really feel like we hit our groove, life with two became a little easier, at 2 months (it might have been due to her moving into her own room, Oak into his new big boy bedroom, and everyone getting more sleep:) No matter what, Isla really has a sweet personality, the softest skin (and some rolls that Oak never had), and she loves to snuggle. At two months, she was 12 pounds, 12 oz. and 23.75 inches...she is so beautiful and we love her. I told Alan the other day, that maybe it has taken me longer to get to know our little girl, just because she has a big brother that takes the center stage so often...but, boy has she taken my heart. I love her so much, more every day!! Great Grandma Buehler (Great MeMe as Oak calls her now) came for a visit-it was so wonderful for Isla to meet her. Thank you Grandma! Chillin' with Uncle Tim

Alan had a great birthday week...at least, he says he did:) I got him some surprise gifts, we had a family Mexican dinner on Thursday night, took cake and balloons (that Oak asccidentally let go of outside the car. His response was "uh-oh, ballons go to the sun...bye bye balloons..." and then he cried when he didn't have them to give to daddy-tender hearted boy) to school on Friday, and we had a great date night downtown (with Isla in tow), enjoying the sights and having yummy seafood. My words in his cards throughout the week did not fully express how much I love him and how proud of my husband I am. He is an AMAZING man, son, brother, husband, father...and continues to strive to be better every day in so many new ways! I love you, Alan Lowell and I hope you know how special you are to all of us!

Well, it was our first "vacation" of the summer and it was to celebrate the official end to summer, Labor Day. We rented a house on Lake MI with my family and it was a great time of sun, beach, very cold water, cards, food, and trying to rest with 4 kids around under the age of 4:) We had a lot of fun and the change of scenery was refreshing for us-although vacations are not what they used to be before kids...Alan and I still really needed the time away and felt refreshed coming home. We didn't get time for the planned moonlit walks, but we had some really precious times as a family early in the mornings by the beach, snuggling in our family bed, and watching Oak play with his "cousins" and Isla snuggle and coo at her Grammy and Grampy! Now, we are back and beginning the fall "routine", as routine as it can be around here:)

A couple of notes for future remembrance:

Oak has been talking up a storm and amazes us with what he knows and remembers-also cracks us up a lot of the time...one funny thing this weekend was his recognition that Grammy and Grampy have different last names than he does...this was a whole new thing for him. So, now my dad is "PePe Aners", not just PePe:)

Isla is holding her head up very well and loves to look into our faces and give big, open-mouthed grins. She seems to be growing like a weed, we will see in 2 weeks at her 2 month appt. how much:) She was so exhausted after the weekend that she has been taking long naps the past two days...but, then waking up looking thankful for letting her rest:)

Isla's First Month

Our sweet, baby girl is growing and changing every day. We have really enjoyed our first month with her...and we are settling in to being a 4-some. She is a great baby so far. She is starting to smile more at us, and loves to be held upright, trying to hold her head up, loves to snuggles close and coos at her daddy and big bro...we are learning who she is and how to best care for and love her more each day! Of course, I have already given her several nicknames, fidgy midgy, chunky monkey, missy sissy, etc. Happy 1st Month Izzy, you are our wonderful little sissy! (Sorry most of her pictures are either asleep or with Oak...her big bro is a ham for the camera, what can we say...but, he loves his baby sissy so much, the hugs and kisses are abundant:)

This is a smattering of Oak's Birthday Week- you know how we do it in the Carter house:) We had birthday presents and pool party with Uncle Shaun and Aunt Mandie on Sunday afternoon, a neighborhood ballon, bubble, and cupcake party on Wednesday, and a family party (supposed to be at the beach, but it downpoured, so we hung out at the Anders compound:) on Friday night, Oak's birthday day. All in all, it was a wonderful week to celebrate the joyous life of our son...2 years of fun, excitement and adventure. Thank you to our family and friends for celebrating Oak with us! We love our little guy and we are so blessed to have him in our lives!

Family Visits

Uncle Shaun and Aunt Mandie came for a visit from NYC. We enjoyed playing with them, swimming at a pool, and playing at the park. We celebrated Isla's arrival and Oak's 2nd Birthday...it was great to see them, hug them, and just be with them! Thank you, Shaun and Mandie, for the blessing of having you as our brother, sister, aunt and uncle (unky)! We love you! (Some of these pics are small, because I got them from Shaun's online album...sorry!) Then, we had a visit from Mom Carter. She was with us for 8 days to be with Isla and celebrate Oak's birthday as well. We had a lot of fun hanging out, playing outside, at the beach and parks and she blessed us so much by helping to take care of/play with/sing to/rock one child or another, did load after load of laundry and ironing, played with us, and just enjoyed being around! Thank you, Mom, so very much...once again, we thank God for the amazing parents that we have...and how amazing you all are!!

Isla Lynne Carter, our precious little girl...

Born on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 10:46 PM. She weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. She looks a lot like her older brother did when he was first born, just "more petite and feminine" as daddy says!

Thank you Lord for your gracious, loving gifts...and blessings abundant!

9 Days Over-cooked and still waiting

Thought I should post a short update, since people are waiting so patiently for news of the baby's arrival. I went for my 41-week check-up two days ago and the non-stress test showed the baby's movement and heart rate to be normal and mature, ready for birth. I am still not barely dilated or effaced as has been the case for over 2 weeks, even though I have been feeling some cramping and "yucky" every night (poor Al having to put up with me after 6:00pm:). They checked fluid levels and I had low-normal fluids, but according to my doc, still normal and nothing to worry about or take action upon. So, the plan is, if the babe does not come on its own before Tuesday, to check my dilation and begin inducement on Wednesday, July 29, at the latest. Please continue to pray for safety and health for both the baby and I:) Thank you...

So, our little babe that we thought we would have by July 4, is going to end up being an end of July baby:) In reality, although I am not completely comfortable all day...it has been a great couple of weeks to play and spend time with Oakster...slowly get prepared for the new little one...and for Alan to get through the toughest part of his summer classes...God is wise and knows when the timing is best, we are confident of that!

Still no little munchkin'

So, I am thinking of being mad at my doctor...last night in the middle of my sleepless tossing about, I remembered something. My original due date (based on menstrual cycle) was July 21, and my doctor changed it at 12 weeks based on the size the baby was measuring to one week earlier...well, duh, look at the genes this kid has, of course it is going to measure "big." So, if my real "due date" is this coming Tuesday, and this whole week I have had to answer a thousand questions, looks, and phone calls, as to why the baby hasn't come yet...well, then I am thinking about being mad at my doctor!!

Due dates...they are so arbitrary anyway, right?

On another note, I got to hold a newborn at a birthday party today...and wow, did I start to get the jitters again...as much as we want to meet our new little one...we are thoroughly enjoying this stage with Oak, so fun, so active, so independent, so responsive, just a big guy...and the thought of a completely helpless, although sweet as sugar, newborn scares Al and I a bit...but, look at the millions that have done it before us...we can make it, I know we will!!

Please keep praying and hoping for safe labor and delivery and a healthy new baby!

Sorry for being quite delinquent in posting...as usual, it has been busy around our house, with the end of the school year, Alan's summer classes, summer fun, and the new baby coming...so I have been trying to take some pictures, but just haven't had a chance to post them...so for those that have been wanting updates, I am truly sorry (Grandma and Erin:) I am 4 days from baby #2's due date...and so far, no major action. We are trying to enjoy the summer weather, beaches and parks...and time with our little Oaker before baby arrives:) Oak has been changing so much lately...just so Alan and I don't forget down the road-and because this blog is kind of our family scrapbook (not that you all want to know this stuff), I want to post some of Oak's moments/phrases from the last month or so:

Here is a quick photo of my "tummy" from Saturday, July 4th, 10 days before due date...and holding! Sorry I haven't had a lot of belly shots this time...it hasn't been as pretty for sure-and my focus has been on chasing after Oaker and everything else:) Doc said everything looked good this morning (Dilated 1-2, 40-50% effaced), so it could be tomorrow or it could be 3 weeks from now...that we see the newest Carter!

Day of Rest

In our current society, I find that most people don't take a "sabbath" any more. Although, we may attend church on Saturday or Sunday, those days still entail a lot of work, and often, are days that most people get their home "to-do" lists done. I was reading an article about this last Sunday, Mother's Day, the first day I hadn't "worked" in months and really felt convicted to try to start honoring this for the sake of life...loving life...enjoying life...breathing in life...taking time to "be" before God!! My husband has been telling me this for years...and we have gone through our seasons of having a day off together to rest, relax, and enjoy whatever may come along. But over the past 6 months, we have not had days like this on a weekly basis...we have tried to find an evening or afternoon here or there...but have not honored time to just "BE." This season of having only Oak to play with is coming to a close shortly (baby bro or sis is coming in about 8 weeks)...we want to take it all in!!

So, I decided today would be my day of rest this week...although Oak still needs cared for (it doesn't feel like work, if I don't "schedule" it), we have done a few minor maintenance pick-ups around the house, but other than that we have spent the entire morning playing outside, enjoying the glorious day. We have walked to a friend's, borrowed the bike and trailer, took a bike ride, played at the park, ate our lunch in a backyard picnic, took a mid-day bath, read books, and now are napping/reading in the sun (and hopefully all that the rest of the day will hold is playing more outside with neighbors, grilling out for dinner, and playing at the garden tonight with daddy-yes, Michiganders do spend 98% of April-September outside, since we have been cooped up during the winter). Don't get me wrong, these activities are part of our normal routine (Oak has been outdoors every waking moment since late March, visiting a playground at least once a day, if not more..he knows where every one is within a 20 mile radius and yells "groundy" any time we pass near one), but today it just seems different, since nothing is "scheduled," and we can go where the wind takes us. Tomorrow we will return to our "to-do's" and work schedule...but how refreshed I feel after today-thank you, Lord!!

Maybe this doesn't resonate with you, because you already know how to rest and "be", but for those of you out there, who are "do-ers" and have your lists for every hour/day of the week (even when on vacation)...hopefully you can find your day of rest this week..."schedule" it and then sit back and enjoy!

We thoroughly enjoyed Easter with Oak this year...We tried explaining to Oak the true meaning of Easter, and we are not sure he got it yet;)...but he does understand the candy this year...he was able to participate in 2 Easter egg hunts (and now knows how to run and grab multiple eggs at once, although mommy made him share his stash afterwards with other friends:) We were able to spend most of Easter weekend as a family and with my parents and brother and his wife. It was relaxing, fun, and a joyous time to celebrate the gift of our Savior and His amazing love for us!

Spring Break in Chicago

We were so excited to be able to take a 3-day trip to the windy city last week...the weather was supposed to be cold and snowy, and God blessed with sunny and 50's...we were so thankful. We showed Oak our old neighborhoods and small and exactly the same restaurants that we loved when we lived there 10 years ago, and we got to walk all over the city and go to the zoo, children's museum, parks, Navy Pier, the history museum and many of our favorite places. We love every place we have lived because of the people, culture, food, and memories...but Chicago will always be our favorite BIG CITY! And Oak is definitely our boy...he took note of every bus, truck, and train he saw. He loved walking down the sidewalks hand in hand with us amidst the traffic, big buildings and throngs of people. It was such a great respit for us as a family during a very busy season in our lives...what a joy!

So, it has been way too long since we have posted...our sincerest apologies!! Many factors have come into play-our computer crashed and we lost all of our pictures since Colombia, it was getting fixed for over 2 weeks, and life has been quite hectic lately:)

How has your new year begun? We hope it has been wonderful! Some updates on us:

Alan-Started a new semester at Lighthouse and began his 2x/week night class

Liz-Began work at Wedgwood, 2nd shift, 3-4/week, is growing bigger and almost half-way through this pregnancy

Oak-(It's kind of hard to put into words all the ways he is changing right now)-He is running around and playing non-stop, loves to hug everyone, favorite words are ball and car, but tries to say many others, loves to make animal sounds, loves to read books over and over, loves to help mommy/daddy cook or do dishes, knows where the baby is in mommy's tummy, is such a sweet, loving boy (We are so blessed and thank God every day for the son that He gave us-a treasure and joy every moment!!:)

Although we have been busier with me working at night and Alan taking classes, we are truly thankful for God's provision and find that we are soaking up the quality time we have as a family (since there is not a lot of it each week:). We are also thankful for the little blessings that this job has brought to us-extra one-on-one time for Daddy and Oak, the chance to work with kids that need love, guidance and to know that God is all-loving, more awareness of what being a parent of this generation means and all that we need to trust God to guide and protect us in-just to name a few! We relish this time together-just the three of us-as we eagerly await and prayerfully trust God with the next step in our journey when the new baby arrives in July!

Visit to Great-Grammy's House

This is the highchair that my brothers and I used to eat at when we would visit my Grandma's house...so it was quite "momentous" to have Oak eat at it...and cute!

My mom, Oak, and I went to Ft. Myers Beach, Florida for a long weekend before Christmas to visit my Grandma...she was anxious to see Oak since the last she had seen of him was a few moments after he was born. We enjoyed the sunny, warm weather (while at home Alan and Dad were weathering one of the worst winter storms Michigan has ever seen, several feet of snow in a couple of days:), played in the sand and ocean (Oak's first time in salt water...), and Grandma's pool, and met lots of Grandma's "family" that are wonderful people. Thanks Great-Grammy for having us...we love you!

The Holidays and SNOW, SNOW, SNOW

We are sorry for not posting in so long...it has been a fun-filled, busy, and exciting last month. We have had snow almost every day for a couple of weeks now...

light, fluffy stuff, then wet, heavy stuff, then cold temps in the teens so much so that we have about a foot on the ground today...a beautiful, sunny day!

Oak is not sure what to think of it...I keep bundling him up and trying to take him out...but after a few minutes his hands get too cold and he begins to cry. So, we have been tearing apart the house having lots of indoor play time.

Alan's parents visited for Thanksgiving again this year...a great time of hanging out and catching up and announcing to the Carter's and Anders' at the same time that Oak is going to be a big brother (can you read the shirt? I couldn't get a good picture:)...

Yes, you read that right, we are pregnant again and due sometime in late July. We were as shocked as you are, since our motto has been "one and done" since we had Oak. But, God in His incredible ways and humor decided we weren't done...so, after a couple of minutes (for Alan) and a couple of days (for me) of working through the unexpectedness of it all...Alan's motto has been "awesome and unexpected!" And, I am with him...we now are expecting another little munchkin who will be just under two years younger than Oak...I know, we will have our hands full!! We are excited, blessed, and thankful...and of course battling through the first trimester, with my nauseau and exhaustion. It sure is different this time, though, trying to keep up with Oak while feeling this way!

We now are into the furry of Christmas with parties, baking, making things, decorating, and shoveling, shoveling, shoveling the snow (every morning, at dark, 6:30 am, Alan and I are out there shoveling away...really beautiful, really refreshing, we love it)!

A Daddy who's in the mix...

I knew that Alan would be a good dad long before we had children...I fell in love with my husband for so many reasons, but one of them is his love for life and playing...so this works well with kids...this is also why Alan is such a great teacher...he relates so well to youth! But, I want to take a cue from a friend and take a minute to praise my great hubby for not only being my best friend, and a wonderful husband, but also for being a GREAT dad...He loves playing with Oak every minute he has with him, but he also loves to read to him and gets giddy over books that he finds to read with Oak. He will not leave him in the morning without family prayer and hug-time, and will not put him to bed at night without a Bible story, prayer and a kiss. He writes to him the history of our family and about his passions, dreams, and hopes for life and for Oak's life. He praises me for taking care of him and trying to teach him good things during the day. He teaches Oak and tries to guide him to be a kind little boy. He prays for him daily (if not more) and all that God is doing and will do in his life....I guess I could go on and on...but, more than anything, I thank God each day for the man He blessed me with, as a partner on this journey of life...I could not have dreamed of or asked for anything more! Alan, I love you with all of my heart...you are THE BEST!

I find us so busy on certain days that I have to stop myself and take time to play with Oak...which is absolutely the first thing I love to do and the most fun thing to do these days!!!:)

A little update on Oak...He is walking, nay running, all over the place. He will play outside with or without anyone for as long as we will let him...and does not want to come in for food or sleep, ever. He eaglerly awaits Daddy's arrival home every day, so that he can play and wrestle with him every minute until bedtime. He loves to give hugs to anyone, especially the baby boys that are our neighbors. He brings books to us throughout the day and wants to sit and "read" them with me...saying sounds as I read. He bops his head and dances to any music or any item that he thinks produces music...absolutely hilarious!! He can say a few words clearly, like dada, mama, bye, nana (for banana we think), and is working hard on ball, book, balloon (basically saying baaa for everything that starts with a "B":)

Needless to say, while the world around us is unstable and most are pessimistic, we are thoroughly enjoying our little guy and reminded of how GREAT LIFE is and HOW BLESSED we are by his innocence and laughter every day!!

Breathe It ALL In

The last month has been a whirlwind of activity...as August and September usually are...so much so, that I don't know how to sit here in the quiet. There will always be things "to do", but for now, I want to be still in this peace and silence. As fall comes upon us with cool breezes and the changing color of the leaves, I am trying to soak it all in...

I watch my little boy walk around our yard exploring every rock, leaf, flower, and bug. I wonder where the last year has gone...yes, it has been fun and full of adventure, trials, struggles, and joys...but I find I am sad as I watch him...why? Maybe I feel this little life that God has entrusted to us is racing by. Oak is such a precious boy, so inquisitive and loves to laugh and smile...and I feel honored to be able to see God's creation and unique handiwork in his life. I don't want to miss anything...I want to "be in" all of the moments...I want him to know how much his dad and I love him and would sacrifice anything for him. Yet, I know that he will have his own story...and we want to foster his love for life and people in such a way that he has roots and wings...is solid and flexible...is comfortable and adventurous...Lord, Oak is yours...

My mind continues to meander through the years...remembering so many wonderful times as a kid, a teen, a college student, and a young married...life changes each day, but oh, what a blessed life I have had. I am so thankful for all that God has done and continues to do...and I am in constant amazement at what He is teaching me!

Lord, help me to love each moment of life, be thankful for the past (no regrets or wistfulness), hope in the future (no worries or fears), and BE in the now (not absent)!

31 years and still kickin' it...

Alan's birthday week was so much fun this year...each morning Oak and I gave him a gift coupon for various things like mowing the yard, cleaning his car, a date night, etc. and a treat...and then his birthday came about and what a surprising day. Alan went off to school early, and Oak and I rushed around to make home-made cupcakes to take up to school as a surprise for Alan and his advisory group (basically a homeroom). At 10:00, as we were walking out the door, Alan called to say that school had been cancelled because the school had been broken in to the night before. So, Alan got to have breakfast, lunch, and 2 meetings with his fellow teachers, a day to catch up and relax, we still brought up the cupcakes and visited, and then we had a great family dinner at a Hibachi steakhouse that night. All in all, Alan said it was one of his best birthday weeks...

Walking along...

So, Oak took his first unassisted steps about 6 weeks ago...but no one would believe me, because of course he wouldn't do it again in front of anyone...and it would only be one, two, three, or one, two, and then splat on his face:) Then 4 days before his birthday, he decided he finally wanted to crawl to get across the room instead of having to walk the perimeter along the walls and furniture to get to where he wanted to (probably the latest crawler in the history of mankind:). He does what we call the "wounded soldier" crawl, one leg up and one leg dragging behind as leverage. He now moves pretty quickly using this method. The day after he started to crawl, we were at the mall just walking around. I was holding his hand and walking as usual, and all of a sudden he let go and took about 10 steps to the next bench. Then he did it again to the next pole. From then on, Oak walks alone when he feels like it (dependant of course on the terrain, time of day, mood of Oak, the alignment of all the stars...ha ha:) Now, on most days, he switches between crawling to one spot, holding my hand to another location, using furniture to the next pit stop and then taking his own steps for the final leg. It is so cute and quite hilarious to watch him waddle around. Our little guy...growing up too quickly!!

Oak's 1st Birthday

Mom and Dad threw a big bash with our family and friends to celebrate my 1st Birthday (I am 30" tall and weigh 20 pounds now). Oak's First Camping Trip

Although Alan and I prefer rustic, backpack trips to campground camping, we had a wonderful time last week on our first camping trip with Oak. We went to a campground only about 45 minutes away on Lake Michigan that is small, has lots of trees, sandy sites, and that I went to many times with my family when I was a kid (and it has an ice cream shop at the end of the park...an added bonus:) We figure until Oak can carry his own pack and/or is not wearing diapers we probably won't do any family rustic camping...Oak seemed to love just being outdoors for three days straight, playing in the dirt, sand, water, hikes with daddy and mommy, and sleeping in a tent with an open view to the trees and stars. We are planning to try another trip over Labor Day weekend a little farther north.

The Dog Days of Summer

Yes, we know that our 85-90 degree heat is nothing compared to those of you in Texas and California...but with no A.C. and a little munchkin that wiggles and wrestles and snuggles and moves all the time...we have been sweating like dogs. The heat has caused us to be outside most the time in the city pools or splash pads, playgrounds, area lakes, or just on the front porch. Oak has been shoeless and dirty most days...and we love it! Just yesterday, though, our humidity broke and everyone was out and breathing the fresh air...saying, "this is why we live in Michigan!" One of those beyond gorgeous days.

Colombian Family Reunion

We spent the past week in the Poconos with our Colombian Family, with 3 new little members that we did not have when we began 4 years ago (it is amazing to see how time flies and life changes in great ways)...it was such a wonderful time to catch up on the past year apart...we spent our time talking, eating, playing, enjoying the kids, reminiscing about the past and hoping for the future. The week came to an end too quickly...as we know that we won't see each other for another year. Alan and I are so thankful for the "family" that we have from our time living in Colombia...they will always be close to our hearts!! We love you Gabe, Erin, Noah and Isa/Iris?, Ben, Sarah, and Katie, Kim and Suzy (and those who couldn't make it...Andres, Joy and Raul)...and can't wait to see you SOON!!

Summer Fun

Alan, Oak, and I have been thoroughly enjoying the beautiful weather and all of the fun activities that come with summer...the beaches, the parks, BBQ's, picnics, walks, hikes, and bike rides...and of course, ice cream! Some of Oak's favorite summer activities are riding in the backpack carrier, high enough up that he can reach the leaves of the trees (this is usually on daddy's back), swinging, and squeezing sand between his fingers and toes! We are having so much fun!!

Community Garden

Those of you who know me, know that I am a Type A, linear-thinking, analytical person...who is quite emotional and intense as well...quite a combination. I do feel sorry for Alan sometimes:). Creative, artsy types of things have never been my strong suite, although I do feel I have grown in this area throughout my life...well, I decided to take on a new endeavor to further my learning. We joined the new community garden in our neighborhood...now this is me, the one who stood and watched my mom weed and garden my entire life and would have rather run off and mow than do any of what she was doing on her hands and knees. But, I thought this would be such a great way to get to know our neighbors, grow some fresh produce, and have fun outside with Alan, Oak, my mom, and anyone else who wants to help during our beautiful Michigan summer. So far it has turned out to be a wonderful venture....

P.S. I also somehow got roped into being on the leadership team for the garden...which has used some of natural gifts, like organizing and planning. But, when garden members have come to me asking how, what, or where to plant certain things, I just shrug my shoulders, point to some of our garden veterans, and say "maybe she can help." But, it sure looks like you are having fun out here!"

We were able to celebrate Alan's dad's birthday, mom's graduation, and Mother's Day with the Carter-side of our family...it was a great time catching up with everyone, many of whom we haven't seen in a few years! We ate a lot of good food, had some great laughs, and celebrated some very momentous occasions. It was wonderful!

Mark and I grew up together and actually worked together in high school. Then Alan and he were in the same dorm in college. Mark was in our wedding, and Alan was in Mark and Carolyn's wedding. And now we live down the street from Mark, Carolyn, Bella, and Maxwell...isn't it great how God weaves our lives together with friends and family? It is wonderful to live near the Baas' again and to rekindle our friendship during this new stage in our lives.

The warm weather has finally come...2 weeks in the 70's and 80's...enjoying our blooming flowers, Oak getting to be free from so many clothes, being outdoors all day long (other than nap time), trying to swim in our "backyard bath-tub," baseball games with daddy...and much, much more.
But, Uh-oh...it hit freezing temps for the past 4 days...sunny but very cold and windy. Pull out the coats again, bundle up, keep smiling, because we know the warmth will be here to stay soon!

We decided that even though it was still rainy and chilly this past week, we couldn't wait any longer and had our first family BBQ at Grammy and Grampy's house this past Friday evening. It was a nice time just to relax with the fam and eat some grilled food! Oak also got a little bit of non-helmet play time...I bet it felt good!

Where once there was an average little boy, who liked to take walks with his dad, and play at the park with his Grammy...

Now...there is Oak, the Super Helmet Boy. He can ride in wagons, faster than the speed of light, he can rip to shreds any object put in front of him (in case Dad's saw isn't working), he can wrestle alligators to the ground... He's our SUPER KID!!

Disclaimer: Helmet does not actually give you super human powers, but Oak sure looks cute in it!

Snow...still??

So, I know that back in November when Alan and I were so excited about our first winter with snow in many years, you laughed and thought, "They will be sick of it by spring." Well, we still love the snow, and so appreciate the changing of the seasons. But when a blizzard appeared on Thursday evening, only to cover the cleared-up ground, again, we thought, "AGAIN"...and had to catch ourselves. We have had some short spells of nice weather up into the 40's, everyone out trying to start doing their spring clean-up and yard work, walking the neighborhood, etc. And then we get blasted again. Today, April 1, all of the snow in our yard is officially melted...and as Oak and I drove home from the grocery store, it started to...yep, you guessed it, snow again. The funny part about it is that I love it...I love the cold, I love the warm, I love the in-between. The changes really help you to appreciate and enjoy each day. So, Oak and I have been out for walks daily, in between snow flurries and sunshine and are still taking advantage of fun indoors, too...we headed to the pool last Friday at the YMCA with Oak's buddy, Asa, and my buddy, Heather, (Asa's mom). The boys were so cute and really enjoyed the water...we are very much looking forward to what the beach will hold this summer!

We are having warm chili tonight and might be grilling out by the weekend...you never know:)!

My first Easter was great. I went to church with my family, then had lunch with them and got to hang out at Grampy and Grammy's house for a little while. It was very cold outside, so mom said we would wait to have an egg hunt next year. I gave all my Easter candy to mom and dad, but I made out with 2 really soft "chicks", that are great for chewing, and a pail for the beach this summer. Thanks Grammy and Aunt Libbie...It was a nice day!

Moving Day

(I tried to post this last week, but our computer was acting up...)

Moving Day Chaos...and Oak with BIG smiles in the middle of it all...

So, we finally moved in last Saturday...with the help of family and friends, we now have all of our stuff in one location for the first time in our adult lives!! We have been enjoying the house this week, although we have been slow in unpacking everything since Alan has been working long days, and I have been juggling my work, taking care of Oak (who is increasingly active and talkative lately), various appointments, etc. It has been nice to have breakfast each morning and dinner every night together around our new table...and we had our first dinner guest last night, when my dad joined us for dinner. Slowly, but surely we are settling in...and we feel so thankful for our new home. Oak and I have also enjoyed taking walks around our new neighborhood this week as the weather has been sunny and a bit warmer. The unpacking will get done...the cleaning will get done...the long list of fix-ups and house projects will get done...but, for now we are taking our time and enjoying our first home as a family!

P.S. We sure do miss Grammy and Grampy, though...

Workin' Day and Night...

We're still not moved into our house...although, we have been spending day and night there working hard to get Oak's room and the bathroom done.
The pictures are of Alan in Oak's room prepping...and then the green room is Oak's room today...almost ready to move in.
I am working on the new tile we laid in the bathroom...I'll post the "after" picture once its all the way complete. My brother, Tim and Alan are working hard to finish it up...we replaced everything except the tub basin.
And of course, Oak is "working hard" in his jump-up and exersaucer. It is amazing how much he is changing every day...so inquisitive about everything...anxious to be moving, but not yet really getting anywere on his own. He's our little bugaboo!

We do promise to get some inside shots of the house and of Alan and I (we do realize that Oak doesn't need to be in every picture...somehow it just happens:)...right now everything is torn apart as we re-do the floors, bathroom, paint, and fix little odds and ends that we seem to find need fixing each day...We are having fun and trying to take our time, since we know that being homeowners is a never-ending project!!
(Some tools have been thrown, the Lowes' professionals know us by name, and Oak is getting more used to playing and taking naps in this strange new place...Alan and I love learning all these new things...)

Here are a couple of photos from our play-times over the past few weeks...Oak is getting really good at sitting up on his own to play and loves rolling around and wrestling on the floor...we are having such a great time with our little guy!
P.S. In the last photo, you are seeing naked time before bath that happens nightly. Last night, Oak wanted to play with his train...notice how the train is strategically placed:)!!

Busy Buzz of January

Since the holidays finished, we have been running non-stop...

Oak has cut 2 teeth and has another one on the way ( I still can't get a good picture of it...he nevers opens wide enough whenI have the camera around), he is eating rice cereal in the AM and PM, he is sitting up on his own for about a minute or two , playing with a ball or toy, and then falls to one side or another, he scoots around the room on his back using his legs as pushing tools, and he talks, screeches, and sings constantly. He is so much fun to be with that we hate to put him to bed at night (although, we do usually collapse in exhaustion once he is down...and are thankful for a bit of a break).

Alan has been busy subbing every day (he starts a long-term sub for an athletic director in March), overseeing basketball games and doing real estate at night and on the weekends...and, of course, being the best dad, trying to find those few precious moments to play and bond with his little guy.

I have started working part-time for my parents with Oak in tow (he loves being at the office...although Grandma and Uncle Tim don't get much work done when he is there), along with trying to keep up with my mommy duties and search for full-time jobs in the education area:)

...And we bought a new car and a new house! You are probably saying, "WHAT?" Yes, we finally decided to buy a good used car so that I can get around while Alan is working, and we found a cute little brick house, in a great neighborhood, in the city, close to our church and friends, for a really great price. So, now we are busy doing the final paperwork to buy the house, getting car and house insurance, and picking out paint colors, bathroom fixtures, etc., to do some updating of the house before we move in. We also have realized that we have no furniture (except Oak...he is all set:). When we moved to Colombia, we gave all of our furniture away...so, we have been slowing finding what we need through family and friends' give-aways, and through used stuff online, etc. We don't need much, though, right? A bed, a table, and a couch and we are good to go...!

All in all, we are enjoying life, and continuing to thank God each day for his provision. We are amazed at His daily love and grace that bring us through...we still don't know what each day is going to hold, but we always pray that God uses us in some way to love others! We pray that you are seeing His love and sharing it with others today!

2008, A Great Year of Firsts...

New Year's Day with Jeff, Heather, and Asa...

On New Years Day, when Oak woke up, Alan and I had a great beginning of the year with our son. We prayed with him and talked with him about the joy of a new year with new adventures and goals...and we explained how this year was going to hold so many new things for Oak...so many "first times." Among those "firsts" lately has been a constant desire to "talk"...basically make loud noises to join in our conversations or to play and keep us awake in the middle of the night. He also has added to the talking a bit of a shriek-like bird sound...quite hilarious. He is also getting really good at eating his toes, scooting on the floor and almost rolling over by himself. He loves to kiss and hug...and smile at anyone who will notice him...and gets frustrated if they don't smile back at him. He tried some rice cereal, as well, but is still pretty found of mommies bottles instead. But, probably the most momentous "first" in this first week of 2008 was that Oak has his first tooth! His drool had been ever-increasing in the last month...but last night when Alan was playing with him he felt the new little white tooth popping through his bottom gums. Amazingly, Oak seems quite unphased...he hasn't been any more fussy, etc. than normal. Once again, we thank God for giving us with such a laid-back little guy-we definitely don't deserve him, but we sure enjoy him!

More Christmas Fun....

"Where did all our snow go?" On Sunday, Dec. 24th we reached temps in the 40's and 10 inches of snow melted in 5 hours...then later that day we got hit with 40 mph winds and another 6 inches of snow...oh the fun of winter in MI!!
Grandma Nonna, Mom, and I made Christmas cookies...everyone said they were yummy....
Early Christmas morning, I tried on my reindeer hat from Great-Grandma Buehler...I am so cute...
I really enjoyed my first "sledding" trip with mom and dad...I was really warm in my big blue coat!

Christmas Family Fun!

My first Christmas was SOOOO much fun! My Uncle Shaun and Aunt Amanda came home from NYC...so I got to play with them a lot...I get along great with them. I also got to enjoy the Christmas lights and music with everyone...but not the food, yet! My snowgirlfriend (in the picture) was my favorite decoration to kiss and hug. I got some great gifts from both my grandparents and my aunts and uncles, like a radio flyer wagon and a train that lights up and plays music. Most of all, I enjoyed playing with my family (we went sledding:) and celebrating Jesus' birth...He was a little baby like me! Thank you to everyone who sent me wonderful clothes, toys, and books...they are so wonderful and I am learning so much with them! I love you and hope you enjoy your new year!

Holiday projects...

It seems that Oak and I have had a lot of projects to get done lately...Christmas shopping, wrapping, packaging up things to be sent to family and friends...today we decided to work on baking some cookies and making his footprint/handprint ornaments. We decided we should wear something festive to put us in the mood. Of course, the inexperienced mommy/artsy person that I am, we tried to bake and do the footprint at the same time...not necessarily a good idea...cookie dough and plaster were on everything. But, in the end we had so much fun...and wore each other out...Oak is sound asleep right now for his afternoon nap! We hope you are enjoying your Christmas season as much as we are!
